Here at estein we believe that energy efficiency without thermal comfort makes no sense. The main objective is to provide thermal comfort to occupants in winter and summer conditions in terms of air temperature and velocity, humidity, mean radiant temperature… with the lowest energy use. For this we propose new technologies based on renewable energy and/or higher efficiency in order to optimize the use of natural resources.
estein fosters the use of passive design strategies for a natural thermal conditioning. Space heating and cooling are provided mainly based on envelope design optimization. We like to play with heat gains and losses through the building envelope so we can capture and store heat for later release when it is required, as well as natural cooling with no extra energy use.
This precious liquid globally scarce … We don´t want to waste a single drop of water in our buildings. Our systems capture and use rainwater, as well as recycle grey water for non-potable uses like irrigation or toilet flush. This is based on a dual supply piping network (potable-non-potable) and dual drainage (black-grey water). We also help with the design of very efficient gardens that will required a minimum amount of water, through zoning, native plants, mulch, gravel… reducing turf to very specific exclusive areas and complemented with highly efficient irrigation systems.
Daylight enhances space perception and quality and besides reduces the need for artificial lighting. During night time you can save even more with efficient lamps such as compact fluorescent lamps and light emitting diodes (CFL & LED) as well as with electronic control devices.
The sun shines in Mexico during many hours each day and during many days each year… this precious resource! Why not decentralize electricity generation and turn buildings into mini-power plants? Both off-grid PV systems for remote locations and grid-connected in urban areas, photovoltaic cells turn solar radiation into free electricity. Building Integrated Photovoltaic (BIPV) will allow buildings facades to turn into active- power generation surfaces.
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC). New buildings aiming for LEED certification need to show improved practices in 5 areas or categories:
- Sustainable Sites
- Water Efficiency
- Energy and Atmosphere
- Materials and Resources
- Indoor Environmental Quality.
There are 4 levels of certification for LEED NC (new construction) based on the credits achieved through the strategies implemented:
- LEED Certified,
- LEED Silver,
- LEED Gold,
- LEED Platinum.
Innovative design and regional priorities addressed will contribute with additional credits.
Not only new buildings but also existing one can get LEED certification. For existing buildings the system LEED EBOM applies, mainly through implementation of good practices in operations and maintenance. The system LEED Core and Shell (LEED C+S) is to certify commercial buildings for rent. Additionally each tenant will have the chance to certify its space through the system LEED for Commercial Interiors (LEED CI). In an urban scale, the system LEED for Neighborhood Development (LEED ND) guides in the certification of residential areas where mixed uses and alternative transportation systems are promoted.
